Pedal Power

It’s not that I’m against bikes per say. I’ll happily hop on one at the gym from time to time and pedal away as if my life (a.k.a. sneaky slice of chocolate cake) depends on it… But taking a leap from the security of static motion towards the very real task of navigating the city via two wheels, has never appealed.
Sure it’s good exercise and clearly an environmentally sound option, but it just seems like too much hassle. Not only does one have to invest in the beastly thing, but the worry of finding somewhere to lock it up and the very real prospect of it being nicked, all provide excellent excuses for continuing to drag my lazy bones onto the Central line every morning.
Or so I thought… until Boris Johnson, decided to challenge my conscience and make it far too easy to go green! Sponsored by Barclays, the London Cycle Hire Scheme kicks of this Friday 30th July, at 8am. Intended for short journeys, bikes can be collected and dropped off at a variety of ‘docking stations’ scattered around central London.
Sounds genius. So what’s the catch? Well for now you need to register online for 24 hours (£1), 7 days (£5), or annual membership (£45). After that use for the first 30 minutes is free, with incremental usage charges thereafter. But fear not –for those like myself who need to ease themselves in gently, casual use will be available as of September too. Bonus.

So there you have it. A convenient eco-friendly travel option that’s not going to break the bank. And it’ll make the Mayor happy. Visit www.tfl.gov.uk to view details and register.
